In the New Covenant (New Testament), we find several prophets and prophetesses who continued the prophetic function under grace and the work of the Holy Spirit. Here are some of them with biblical references:
🔹 Prophets Mentioned in the New Testament
John the Baptist• Reference: Matthew 11:9–11; Luke 7:28• Jesus Himself called him “more than a prophet” because he prepared the way of the Lord.
Jesus the Messiah• Reference: Deuteronomy 18:15 fulfilled in Acts 3:22–23; Luke 7:16• Recognized by the people as a “great prophet” and confirmed by the Father as the fulfillment of prophecy.
Agabus• Reference: Acts 11:27–28; Acts 21:10–11• Prophesied a great famine and also the imprisonment of the Apostle Paul in Jerusalem.
The Prophets of Antioch• Reference: Acts 13:1• Among them were Barnabas, Simeon (called Niger), Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen, and Saul (Paul before becoming an apostle).
Philip’s Daughters• Reference: Acts 21:8–9• Four virgin daughters who prophesied. They represent the outpouring of the Spirit also upon women in the New Covenant.
Judas and Silas• Reference: Acts 15:32• They were prophets who exhorted and strengthened the brethren with many words.
Anna the Prophetess• Reference: Luke 2:36–38• She was present when Jesus was presented in the temple; she served God with fasting and prayer.
🔹 The Prophetic Function in the New Covenant
• The Holy Spirit democratizes the prophetic gift:
“And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy…” (Acts 2:17)
• The prophetic ministry is established as part of the government order of the Church:“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets…” (Ephesians 4:11)
